8 Things You Need To Know To Prolong Your Juicer Life

NOW THAT you’ve spent your hard-earned money on a good quality juicer that will help take care of your health, here are some important recommendations and tips for how you can best take care of your juicer so it serves you well for the longest time possible.

Tip 1) Don’t run your juicer empty. It’s similar to running your car without oil; we need the oil to lubricate all the moving parts in the engine. Likewise, if you operate your juicer before you are ready to feed in your fruit and vegetables, the parts will rub together and cause friction and increase wear and tear. When you feed food into your juicer, the juice and pulp lubricate the working parts of your juicer, reducing wear and tear, thus prolonging the life of the juicer parts and motor. So prepare everything before starting it up.

Tip 2) It’s best to cut stringy items like celery, fennel or pineapple into short lengths. This prevents their long strings from wrapping around the rotating parts (auger, cutter or twin gears) and getting stuck, and it also stops strings becoming tangled up in a bundle that might block smaller pulp outlets.

Tip 3) When making mixed juices, alternate the softer juicier foods with the tougher, more fibrous ones. The juicier items will help lubricate the harder ones so they slide through the juicer more easily; and the more fibrous items will help the juicer get a grip on the pulpier foods to push them out.

Tip 4) ALWAYS only use your tamper to push food into the juicer, never use a knife or spoon or other inappropriate item. You risk pushing it into the juicer too far which could break the juicing parts, jam the motor or even break an internal gear on a low RPM juicer.

Tip 5) For low-speed juicers that have a reverse function, it is advisable to run the juicer in reverse for just a moment* after you’ve finished your juicing session. This helps to reduce pressure in the juicer and makes it easier to take the parts off the main juicer body.

* When we say a moment, it is literally just that: a quick ‘’on’’ and ‘’off’’, no more than a few seconds.

Tip 6) When you finish juicing, it is a good idea to make it a habit to wash your juicer first BEFORE you drink your juice. The longer you leave it, the harder it will be to clean, because sticky juice left on the parts will dry like glue.

NOTE: None of the juicers we sell are dishwasher friendly. Don’t let other sellers tell you differently. If any parts are put in a dishwasher or placed in very hot water, you could ruin them, because hot water can distort the plastic and also make it more brittle, thus in danger of breaking more easily.

It must be emphasised, at this point, that the warranties on all our juicers only cover faulty manufacture. They DO NOT COVER parts such as juicing screens and mincing cones that break due to wear and tear or misuse. We carry a full range of spare parts if they are ever required.

Tip 7) In time, the minerals, especially from vegetables, build up and stain the juicing parts, and may gradually clog up the holes in the juicing screen. If you notice you are getting less juice than previously and wetter pulp, that is a sure indication that hard mineral deposits are closing up the holes.

An easy way to remove these to open up the holes again is to soak the parts overnight in a solution of 1 part bleach to 7 parts water. Brush and rinse the parts thoroughly under running water, remembering not to use really hot water.

Tip 8) Your juicer may be a reliable and hardy workhorse, but don’t expect it to be able to break up hard seeds or stones, woody stems or tough citrus peel. You are more likely to break your juicing parts, which will no doubt prove a costly inconvenience and frustrating to say the least, especially if you are on an intensive juicing regime. Softer or smaller seeds like citrus and grape seeds break up and pass through a juicer without problem, but hard stones like cherry or pieces of peach stone are screen breakers.
